The small island of Toman in Southwest Malekula now has access to clean and safe drinking water, following the official opening of a VT14 million water system over the weekend.
The project, funded by the Government of Japan, was officially launched by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Andrew Napuat, alongside community chiefs and local officials.
“On behalf of our councils, chiefs, and community members, it is a great honour to officially launch this desalination project,” said Minister Napuat.
The new system includes a special desalination machine that converts seawater into fresh water, providing a sustainable solution for the island’s long-standing water challenges.
Southwest Malekula Area Administrator, Gerald Tamau, said the system would make a big difference for the community.
“We will carry out a visibility study to help guide future projects like this one,” he said.
Elderly resident Annie Ialel told VBTC News that life will now be much easier.
“We live far from the bush and never had access to clean water. Before, we had to walk far just to fetch water or dig wells. Now we finally have clean water in our community,” she said.
The new water system will benefit over 200 people living on the small island.
