Prime Minister Receives Custom Name During First Official Island Visit

PENTECOST & MAEWO, VANUATU – Prime Minister Hon. Jotham Napat has been given the custom name Tuleo-vatu by chiefs in North Pentecost during his first official island visit since taking office. The name, which means “a man with firm and strong words,” was bestowed upon him during a visit to the grave of the late Walter Hyde Lini, the founding father of Vanuatu’s independence and its first Prime Minister.

Accompanied by his wife and a delegation including Members of Parliament and Ministers from Penama Province, Hon. Napat emphasized the importance of honoring the nation’s past leaders.

“I am here today to reassure the chiefs and people of Pentecost that the contributions of our founding father, including the development he brought to many islands, must be repaid. As long as I remain in office, I will ensure that commitment is honored,” he stated.

The visit was not limited to Pentecost. Chiefs in Maewo also conferred a custom name on the Prime Minister, naming him Tarorora in recognition of his leadership.

“The name given to Hon. Jotham Napat by the chiefs of Maewo is ‘Tarorora’,” a Maewo chief announced during the visit.

Beyond ceremonial traditions, the visit focused on critical services such as health and education. In Maewo, the Prime Minister witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by institutions and the steps they are taking to serve their communities.

“From my first day in office, I announced that there would be no lunch breaks in my administration. Some see it as the end, but it was about addressing inefficiencies. Imagine a person traveling from Maewo to collect a pig in a box and waiting all day due to unnecessary delays—this is what we need to change,” he said.

Residents of Pentecost and Maewo view this visit as a potential turning point, hoping it will open doors for the government to address their most pressing needs.
