Plans to Fix Klems Hill Road Underway

Traffic movement is currently being managed at Klems Hill on Efate this week following heavy rainfall that caused landslides and raised safety concerns for road users.

The Public Works Department says the traffic control measures are necessary to ensure public safety after recent weather-related damage to the road.

In a Facebook post this week, Public Works advised motorists to obey road safety signs, including “Drive Slow” and “Give Way,” while travelling through the affected area.

North Efate driver, Solo Firiam, told VBTC News that urgent repairs are needed, as the road has become unsafe.

“This morning when I passed, I noticed the road is no longer safe. Water is running underneath the concrete that was put in place, and only metal wires are holding parts of the road. If a heavy vehicle passes, it could break, and that would be dangerous,” Mr Firiam said.

Market vendor Elizabeth Bethel also raised concerns, saying the road has been in poor condition for a long time and poses risks to women and children who rely on it.

“We market vendors cross this road once or twice a week, and we can see that it is dangerous. The sides of the road are bushy, and we ask the government to please clear and fix the road so mothers can safely go to the market and children can travel to school,” she said.

Public Works has confirmed to VBTC News that they plan to improve the Klems Hill road. Traffic will continue to be managed according to safety signs while the department works with partners to design the road improvement and involve contractors. The project will focus on repairing the areas damaged by landslides.

Traffic management at the site will remain in place until further notice.
