Opposition Moves to Invoke RTI Act Over Allegations Against Ministers

The Opposition side says it will use the Right to Information (RTI) Act to investigate allegations of misconduct involving some state ministers.

According to the Opposition bloc, the allegations include misappropriation of funds, abuse of power, overspending of public finances, and other possible breaches.

At a press conference this week, Opposition Leader Hon. Ishmael Kalsakau said he will personally approach state ministers concerned to seek clarification.

“The Office of the Leader of Opposition will personally approach the state ministers that these allegations are raised against, to give them the opportunity to explain. If public finances are being wasted, we want clear answers,” he stated.

Hon. Kalsakau added that if the Opposition is not satisfied with the responses, the matter will be escalated.

“If there is no clarity, then I will direct the Public Accounts Committee to investigate. If ministers are implicated, the matter will be referred to police and the Commission of Trades. We will make sure complaints are pursued without delay.”

The Opposition has already begun acting on its commitment, starting with a case related to allegations of double contracting involving one state minister.
