New ID Machine Bring Government Services Closer to Remote Islands

With the installation of new ID card machines, people living on Epi, Paama, and Southwest Malekula will no longer need to travel long distances to obtain a birth certificate or national ID card.

During his recent trip to the islands, Minister of Internal Affairs Andrew Napuat emphasized that the government’s goal is to deliver essential services directly to people’s doorsteps.

“The government will try to take the service to your doorstep, but I ask for everyone’s support ,whether through community programs or area councils, we must hold hands and work together,” Minister Napuat said.

As part of the visit, Minister Napuat officially handed over the new ID machines to area councils in Yarsu, Rovo Bay, and Nuvi on Epi, Liro on Paama, and Wintua in Southwest Bay, Malekula.

Local residents have welcomed the move. Dick Kaitip from Lorlow, Southwest Bay, said the new machines would save people from expensive travel costs.

“Before, to get an ID card, you had to go to Lakatoro and spend about 2,000 vatu one way, plus another 1,000 for truck transport. This will really help,” he said.

Deputy Principal of Vaum Primary and Junior Secondary School in Liro, Timothy Mahit, also said the machines would make a big difference for students.

“Many times, when schools apply for grants, students need a birth certificate or ID. Before, this was a big issue, but now it will be easier,” he said.

The new ID machines will also support the processing of birth certificates, helping more people in rural communities access vital government documentation.
