The Ifira community will celebrate the opening of its new Nakamal, Farea Malarua Narsong Tarsongsong, on 26 September 2025. The announcement was made by Teriki Paunimanu Mantoi Kalsakau III, who will lead the cultural and traditional proceedings.
From a press release it states that, to mark the opening, a series of pig-killing ceremonies will be carried out before Teriki unveils the tuki or tamtam, prior to the formal opening of the Farea.
In addition to the Nakamal, Teriki and invited guests will also inaugurate the Farea Teama (Nasama), the Paswoda Village Court Room, the Museum, and Teama Hall.
The order of custom and cultural activities will mirror those performed by Ifira’s forefathers during the historic visit of the Late Queen Elizabeth II in 1974. The occasion aims to showcase these traditions to the younger generation of Ifira, ensuring that their heritage is preserved and carried forward.
Custom invitations will be extended to the Chairman of the Malvatumauri Council of Chiefs, the Vaturisu Council of Chiefs, as well as leaders of the Republic of Vanuatu and government representatives.
Following the traditional ceremonies, the Ifira community, on behalf of Teriki, will host an official function and provide entertainment to celebrate this important milestone.
