A low-pressure system located West of Sanma and Malampa provinces is currently causing widespread weather changes, including heavy rainfall across central islands and strong winds extending to the southern parts of the country.
According to the Vanuatu Meteorology Department, the likelihood of this system developing into a tropical cyclone remains low at this stage.
Weather officer Ms. Ellen Luke said the low-pressure system is expected to gradually weaken as it moves away.
“The low-pressure that is currently here might become a trough by tomorrow, and that trough will be located near the southern islands on Thursday and Friday.”
A heavy rainfall warning is currently in effect for parts of the central and southern islands. Ms. Luke urged communities living near waterways to take precautionary measures.
“We advise people to take extra precautions due to isolated heavy rainfall, which could cause flash flooding or river overflow. Those in low-lying areas or near rivers need to be especially cautious during this severe weather warning.”
Ms. Luke added that Vanuatu can expect improved weather conditions by Saturday and Sunday.
