Tropical Cyclone Seru Update: RED Alert for Tafea Province

The Vanuatu Meteorology Department has issued Tropical Cyclone Warning Number 6, confirming that Tropical Cyclone Seru (Category 2) is currently positioned at Centre Right of Letter K, Number 10 on the cyclone tracking map. The system is moving southwest.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has placed Tafea Province on RED Alert, while Shefa Province is now on ALL CLEAR status.

Reports from Futuna Island in Tafea Province indicate that communities are experiencing strong winds from the cyclone.

Futuna Area Administrator Isso Nihmei stated that residents are sheltering indoors and closely following warnings issued by the Meteorology Department.

Isso Nihmei: “The weather here is dark, with thick clouds covering the villages down to the shoreline. There are occasional heavy rains, but we are fortunate that our communication tower is still standing, allowing us to access the internet and make calls. Strong winds hit us from midnight until this morning, and they continue to affect areas like Matangi Village and Mission Bay. Since the wind is passing from the southwest, villages in that area are experiencing the strongest impact. I am currently in Erol Bay, where the winds are not as strong, but we expect conditions to worsen later tonight as the cyclone moves over.” Authorities urge residents in Tafea Province to remain on high alert and follow official updates
