China’s Ambassador to Vanuatu says his country will never forget Vanuatu’s support for the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Ambassador Li Minggang made the remarks during a government-hosted reception in Port Vila to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and the 76th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Held at Warwick Lagoon, the event was attended by the President of Vanuatu, government ministers, and senior officials, alongside the Chinese Ambassador.
Ambassador Li said the lessons of World War II remain relevant today, stressing the importance of peace and China’s readiness to work with Vanuatu at all levels.
“Vanuatu played an important role in the South Pacific during World War II, and later pursued its own independence. China supported Vanuatu’s legitimate rights at the United Nations. As good friends, our two countries have always supported each other,” he said.
President of Vanuatu, H.E Nikenike Vurobaravu, said the occasion was also a celebration of 42 years of diplomatic relations between Vanuatu and China.
He highlighted the steady growth of the partnership, particularly in infrastructure, education and health, and called for continued cooperation on global challenges such as climate change and public health.
“On this day of remembrance, we extend our warmest congratulations to the people of China. The friendship we share ensures the future will always be bright,” President Vurobaravu said.
The event concluded with a toast marking the 80 years since the victory of World War II, the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and 42 years of friendship between China and Vanuatu a day to reflect on history while looking toward future development.
