Kava in Vanuatu continues to be in high demand internationally, creating strong income opportunities through kava exports.
In 2025, a total of 53 licences were issued by Biosecurity to kava farmers and exporters on Efate and Santo.
However, as the year comes to an end, all kava export licences must be renewed for exporters who wish to continue exporting in 2026.
VBTC News spoke with Acting Principal Biosecurity Officer, Sylvie Bulekuran, who explained the process and timeline for renewing export licences.
Sylvie Bulekuran said anyone wishing to export kava in 2026 must hold a valid licence, as exporting without one may result in penalties. She added that December is the inspection period, when Biosecurity officers assess export facilities to ensure they are ready for the new year. Exporters are given a one-month period, until the 31st of December, to ensure all licences are in place.
Anyone wishing to obtain a kava export licence must apply through the Biosecurity Office.
There are several steps required to qualify for a kava export licence. One key requirement is certification, where the kava export facility must meet Biosecurity OPS 014 kava quality management procedures and pass an inspection before approval is granted.
