Vanuatu Firefighters Begin First French-Led Training

More than 15 Vanuatu firefighters in Port Vila Fire Service are currently undergoing training led by 3 trainers from the Dumbea Fire Service in New Caledonia.

The training aims to help new Vanuatu firefighters build their knowledge and skills in responding to fires and disasters.

This marks the first time a French Civil Protection training has been held in Vanuatu.

The training began yesterday at Cook Barracks and will run for ten days.

Colonel Alexandre Carrat, from the French Fire and Security Department in Canberra, said the training represents a major step forward in cooperation between Vanuatu and France in the area of fire and disaster response.

“It is with great pride that I open today the very first French civil protection training organized in Vanuatu. This training fully aligns with the Pacific Strategy, which seeks to strengthen Pacific nations through cooperation, perseverance, and resilience,” Colonel Carrat said.

He added that the training is part of a long-term partnership between Vanuatu and France to strengthen preparedness and build local capacity among Vanuatu’s firefighters.

Colonel Carrat also confirmed that France is donating firefighting equipment to support Vanuatu’s fire service.

“This initiative also includes the donation of firefighting and protective equipment from France, with an estimated total value of VT6 million. The donation includes essential personal gear and portable pumps, all intended to enhance the operational capacity of the Vanuatu Fire Service. This is designed for you, with dedication, discipline, and motivation, which are the keys to success,” he said.

Captain Chitussi Bruno from the Dumbea Fire Service in Noumea said the trainers did not come only to teach, but also to work together and share experiences from both sides.

“We did not come just to teach , we came to share and find solutions together. Fire is dangerous, so we will train in places like Parliament House, the hospital, and Cook Barracks . all important locations where lives matter. We must learn safety, because fire can kill. This training is for your security,” Captain Bruno said.

Acting Deputy Commissioner for Management, Astrophile Ngwele, speaking on behalf of the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Police Commissioner, thanked the French Republic for the strong partnership.

He said the training will not only focus on how to fight fires but also cover modern techniques, equipment handling, team coordination, and safety management for Vanuatu’s firefighters.
