The President of Vanuatu, H.E Nikenike Vurobaravu, has dissolved the country’s Parliament 18th of November 2024 following a request from the Council of Ministers. This decision comes amid political changes and tensions within the government.
The dissolution was triggered by a significant shift in parliamentary allegiances, as several members of the ruling government led by Prime Minister, Hon. Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas to join the opposition. This shift in allegiance became apparent when Parliament, scheduled to debate the 2025 Budget, had to adjourn due to a lack of quorum. Only 23 members from the government side attended, while the opposition claimed to have increased their numbers to 27 during a press conference.
The dissolution occurred just 24 hours before Parliament was set to discuss a motion to remove the Prime Minister. Additionally, there is a motion already accepted by Parliament to remove President Vurobaravu. With the dissolution, all planned parliamentary business will be halted.
This marks the second time President Vurobaravu has dissolved Parliament. The government had been expected to provide stability following a National Referendum, but it will now be unable to complete its four-year term. At the end of 2023, the President had encouraged political leaders to communicate and work together, inviting them to the state house to discuss the national budget. However, with the current political turmoil, the President has taken steps to dissolve Parliament in light of the ongoing challenges.
