Vanuatu Marks International Women’s Day with Call for Respect and Safety

PORT VILA, VANUATU — International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, was commemorated in Port Vila with a march advocating respect, safety, and the prevention of violence against women.

The march, held last Saturday afternoon, brought together women, fathers, and children to emphasize the importance of respect and safety in communities. Leading the event were the Minister of Justice, Hon. Job Andy, alongside Australia’s High Commissioner to Vanuatu, His Excellency Max Willis, and New Zealand’s High Commissioner, Her Excellency Nicola Simmons. Representatives from the Vanuatu Women’s Centre, the Vanuatu Police Force, and Port Vila Municipality Wardens also participated.

Tatavola Matas, Coordinator of the Vanuatu Women’s Centre, urged parents to instill values of respect in their children.

“We want to reclaim our safety. We should not fear walking in public spaces due to the threat of violence. These children are our future, and it is our responsibility to raise them with the right values,” she stated.

New Zealand High Commissioner Nicola Simmons reinforced the message, calling for an end to violence against women and children.

“We stand together to say no to violence and yes to a society where women and children feel safe and protected,” she said.

Australia’s High Commissioner Max Willis echoed these sentiments, stressing that public spaces and communities must be safe for all.

“We march today to send a clear message: violence must stop. Public roads, public places, and communities should always be safe for women and young people to walk without fear,” he emphasized.

Minister of Justice Hon. Job Andy called on fathers across Vanuatu to support women and work towards a safer society.

“I appeal to all parents, mothers, and fathers to take the time to care for their children. It is our duty to rebuild our nation,” he stated.

The program concluded in front of the Vanuatu Parliament House, highlighting the collective commitment to ending violence and fostering a safer environment for all.
