Pepeyo Dance Group Draws Big Interest with Custom Dresses, Songs, and Dance at World Expo Japan

The Pepeyo Dance Group has captured great attention at the World Expo in Osaka, Japan, this July, showcasing Vanuatu’s rich culture through traditional costumes, songs, and dance performances.

Peter Naparau, second in command of the Pepeyo Dance Group, told VBTC News from Japan that they are proud to present Vanuatu on the global stage, especially during the Independence Day celebrations.

“We are happy. Before we arrived, a group from Futuna came and performed a song they brought back with them. That song is now highlighted here at Osaka 2025 Expo, and everyone recognizes it. When we landed at the Vanuatu pavilion, we were the first group that many visitors wanted to see,” Naparau said.

VBTC News witnessed many locals in Japan lining up to take photos with the dancers, drawn by the striking traditional costumes.

Mr. Naparau explained the special meaning behind their costumes:

“The feathers on top are bird feathers representing your wealth. Having a long feather means you have a small pig and many pigs. The materials include hibiscus, purao, and pandanus. The lower part is made from purao and hibiscus. Our necklaces are made of shells and seeds that decorate the body, and on our arms are coconut shells called pepeyo, which is where our group’s name comes from. This coconut story is the origin of Pepeyo.”

Martin David, International Relations Manager for Vanuatu at the World Expo, said many overseas visitors are fascinated by Vanuatu’s culture and colors.

“The Vanuatu pavilion tells the story of our past and present. Many visitors are interested in our culture; they come, talk, and look at photos. We showcase historical images from our Cultural Center archives that show how people dressed and worked before contact with the outside world.”

During the event, Malaysia and Vanuatu also performed a joint dance at the Malaysian pavilion, attracting a large audience.
