Mauriki Football Club made history last weekend after being crowned champions of the first-ever PVFA Cup, defeating the more experienced Ifira Black Bird FC 2-1 in extra time.
The grand final brought hundreds of football fans together at Korman Stadium on Saturday to witness an unforgettable showdown between the two clubs from South West Efate.
Despite a goalless first half, both teams had several chances to score, setting the tone for an intense match. In the second half, Ifira Black Bird’s Fran Ruben opened the scoring, sending their supporters into celebration.
Just when Ifira thought victory was within reach, Mauriki FC coach Frank King made a game-changing substitution, bringing in reserve player Beni Avok, who scored the equaliser in the 90th minute with a brilliant free kick, forcing the match into extra time.
Early in extra time, Mauriki was awarded another free kick in a similar position. Gerard Avok stepped up and set the ball perfectly for Rodrigue Kellaia, who fired it into the back of the net, sealing the 2-1 win for Mauriki FC.
Minister of Internal Affairs Hon. Andrew Napuat handed the championship trophy to Mauriki FC captain Gerard Avok, as celebrations erupted. Mauriki FC also walked away with a prize of VT300,000.
Earlier that day, Galaxy FC claimed third place after winning the small final.
VBTC Sports understands that this grand final match marked the final tournament to close the 2024–2025 football season under the Port Vila Football Association.
