Port Vila City Council (PVCC) has temporarily restricted rubbish disposal at the Etas dumpsite, closing access after 12pm.
The decision follows a breakdown of the sorting machine, which stopped working last week. PVCC says repair work began on Monday and the machine is expected to be fixed by tomorrow.
Because the sorting system is currently not operating, PVCC has advised caretakers at the Etas dumpsite to open only for half day in order to manage the flow of rubbish.
The council says the situation is a major concern as Efate has only one official dumpsite for waste disposal.
