East Gaua Farmer Invests Over VT2 Million in Peanut Farming

Mark Brian, a peanut farmer from East Gaua, has invested over VT2 million in his farm over the past year. His efforts are expected to yield more than 100 bags of dried peanuts annually.

Brian explained that peanuts are the main source of income for his family.

“I am interested in peanuts because one plot can be planted and harvested in three months. I first planted kava, but it takes longer to harvest. With peanuts, I found that every month can generate income for the family,” he said.

He currently has some plots ready for harvest, while three additional plots measuring 60 x 30 meters are ready to be planted next week.

Brian outlined the harvesting and post-harvest process for export.

“By the first week of October, we will harvest. When it rains, we must cut it, wash it to remove the soil, lay it out to dry, and then put it in copra bags,” he said.

He has four buyers based in Santo who purchase his dried peanuts regularly.

“Yes, there are main buyers that are faithful to buy it,” he added.

Brian estimates that his peanut farming will generate over VT2 million per year.

“For example, 50 bags multiplied by VT18,000, three times a year, that comes to around VT2 million,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Brian plans to move into value-added products, such as salted peanuts or peanut paste.

Farmers like him are demonstrating the economic potential of Gaua, helping establish it as an economic hub for Torba Province through resilient farming practices and locally produced goods.
