President José Ramos-Horta Inspires NUV Students with Peacebuilding Lecture

The National University of Vanuatu (NUV) welcomed His Excellency Dr José Ramos-Horta, President of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, last Friday for a special public lecture on “Peacebuilding and National Reconciliation.”

From a press release it states that the lecture, held at the NUV auditorium, brought together students, staff, government representatives and invited guests, providing a rare opportunity to hear from one of the world’s most respected advocates for peace and diplomacy.

Drawing on Timor-Leste’s journey towards independence, President Ramos-Horta shared reflections on peacebuilding, reconciliation and national development. He told the audience that lasting nation-building is built on unity, dialogue, forgiveness, strong institutions and visionary leadership.

He also encouraged young people to pursue education with integrity, humility and compassion, stressing that sustainable peace depends not only on political agreements but also on education, mutual respect and citizens working together for the common good.

NUV Vice-Chancellor Jean-Pierre Nirua described the visit as a privilege for the University and an inspiration for students.

“It was a great privilege for the National University of Vanuatu to host His Excellency Dr José Ramos-Horta. His remarkable journey and message of peace, reconciliation and visionary leadership have inspired our students and the wider University community. This visit not only enriched the learning experience of our students but also strengthened the enduring friendship between Vanuatu and Timor-Leste, reinforcing the importance of regional cooperation and solidarity across the Pacific.”

The University said the visit reflected its commitment to giving students opportunities to learn directly from international leaders and broaden their understanding of leadership, resilience and reconciliation.

The visit also coincided with Vanuatu’s 46th Independence celebrations, highlighting the strong friendship between Vanuatu and Timor-Leste and the importance of regional cooperation across the Pacific and Southeast Asia.

NUV thanked President Ramos-Horta and his delegation, as well as government representatives, partners, staff, students and invited guests, for making the event a memorable and inspiring occasion.
