Erakor Golden Stars Football Club have claimed the title of the first-ever “Fit & Fierce” football tournament champions, defeating North Efate United in a thrilling grand final at Port Vila Municipal Stadium last weekend. The team also walked away with a prize of 700,000 vatu.

The victory capped off celebrations marking the 50th Golden Jubilee of Vila Central Hospital, which partnered with the Port Vila Football Association (PVFA) to stage the month-long competition.

The grand final drew strong support from football fans and was attended by national leaders, along with FIFA Vice President and OFC and VFF President, Lambert Maltock.

Golden Stars opened the scoring early in the first half before North Efate United struck back, setting up a tense battle for the trophy. But Erakor’s Ryan Wanemut sealed the win with a decisive goal, sparking wild celebrations among the Golden Stars players and fans.

Wanemut finished the tournament as top scorer with five goals, while teammate Kaltapas Jerry was named Best Player. The Best Goalkeeper award went to Sterry Tor of Tafea FC.

Ahead of the final, Tafea FC defeated iCount Yatel FC in a dramatic penalty shootout to secure third place after the two sides were locked at 1–1 at full time.

PVFA President Harry Atison said the tournament was designed not only to showcase football talent but also to promote healthy living.

“This tournament is about advocating health and fighting against non-communicable diseases (NCDs). We want every citizen to eat healthy and stay fit,” he said.

The “Fit & Fierce” tournament is expected to return in the future as part of efforts to link sports with health awareness.
