Tanna People Open Homes for Visitors as Big Events Bring More Demand

High demand for accommodation, transport, and shops shows early signs of economic benefits for the island.

Some people on Tanna are opening their homes to visitors because there are not enough places to sleep. This is happening as the island gets ready to host three big events: the Arts and Culture Festival, Public Service Commission Day, and Independence celebrations.

Business owners and local people say they are already seeing good changes in the economy.

One well-known businessman, Bill Yapsen, said the demand for services on the island is high. He is happy the government chose Tanna to host the events because it is helping the local economy.

“With more than 100 visitors coming, the biggest need is for accommodation,” Mr Yapsen said. “Some families are giving up their own rooms to make space for visitors. This shows how big events can help the island.”

He also said transport is a big issue. “Trucks in Tanna are not enough. All the hire trucks are taken, and now even government trucks from Port Vila and Tanna are being used.”

Mr Yapsen owns one of the biggest shops on the island. He said his business and other services like stores and takeaway shops are seeing more customers.

He believes that during and after the events, people on Tanna will see a strong boost to their economy.
