The Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority (VMSA) has lifted its detention order on the tugboat Kioloa, allowing it to resume operations in Port Vila Harbour.
Acting Director of Ports and Harbours, Robson Tari, confirmed to VBTC News that his office requested a temporary uplift of the order to ensure the continuation of cargo delivery into the country.
“We asked for a temporary uplift that VMSA has granted, and now Kioloa is back in service. Our responsibility is to ensure the cargo service continues, because if we keep placing bans on ourselves, we create more challenges. Kioloa plays a crucial role in exporting cargo boats into the harbour.” he said
Mr. Tari said Ports and Harbours is working closely with VMSA to maintain mutual understanding and ensure that harbour operations remain uninterrupted.
“Revalidation is ongoing. Some crew members have no valid tickets and have been replaced, and are in the process of revalidating their tickets. However, delays in budget approval have impacted the ability to pay fees to the Maritime College.”
He added that the work of the tugboats is essential in supporting the government through annual revenue contributions.
