Cost of Living Protest Moved to 21st Over Permit Delay

A peaceful protest planned to raise concerns over the high cost of living and rising food prices has now been rescheduled to the 21st of this month.

The protest is being organised by Vanuatu Young Women for Change, with preparations and training for participants continuing this week.

Technical adviser for Vanuatu Young Women for Change and Founder and CEO of the Vanuatu Human Rights Coalition, Anne Pakoa, said the change was necessary because the permit for the parade was not received early enough.

“The peaceful protest has now been moved to the 21st because the parade permit did not come in early enough.”

Ms Pakoa said the protest remains focused on development justice, especially the way policies affect women leaders, climate justice, economic justice, and the wider justice system in Vanuatu.

“Mainly this is about development justice and looking at how policy frameworks can strengthen justice systems in Vanuatu.”

She said issues such as the right to water and the right to food remain major concerns, especially as people continue to complain about the rising cost of basic goods.

According to Ms Pakoa, the price increases on rice, meat, juice, flour, milk, and other essentials have become a major source of frustration for many households.

She said the protest aims to raise awareness around what many people see as unfair pricing and over-profiting on essential goods.

“When we talk about injustice, we are also talking about over-profiting on essential products that should remain fair and affordable.”

Ms Pakoa stressed that the march is not about conflict, but about giving people a safe and peaceful space to raise issues affecting their lives.

She said the event remains open to young people, mothers, fathers, workers, and anyone who wants their voice heard on the cost of living.

The rescheduled parade on April 21 is expected to focus on food prices, fuel concerns, land rights, and other justice issues affecting communities.
