Australia Commits Additional VT393 Million for Vanuatu’s Earthquake Recovery Totaling to VT1.7 Billion

Australian Minister for International Development in the Pacific, Hon. Pat Conroy, has announced a further investment of VT393 million in budget support to assist Vanuatu’s ongoing recovery efforts from the recent earthquake. This new funding is an additional fund being added on with the previous VT1.3 billion which brings Australia’s total support to VT1.7 billion for the earthquake recovery . The allocated funds will help the Vanuatu government maintain critical services and implement recovery projects in affected communities.

The support will continue to aid rapid humanitarian assistance, including medical and engineering teams, emergency supplies, as well as efforts to rebuild infrastructure and restore essential services.

When asked about the allocation of the funds, Hon. Prime Minister Jotham Napat explained that the money would be used to continue demolition efforts, contribute to the economic stimulus package, provide wage subsidies for those who lost their jobs due to the earthquake, and support school fees for affected families.

In his statement, Hon. Conroy emphasized Australia’s unwavering commitment to Vanuatu, reaffirming that Australia will always standby its Pacific neighbor. He highlighted the strong economic ties between the two nations, with Vanuatu exporting more goods and services to Australia than any other country.

Hon. Napat expressed his gratitude for Australia’s continuous support over the 25 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He also acknowledged the significant role that Australia is playing in Vanuatu’s earthquake recovery and the financial assistance provided in response to the disaster.

Prime Minister Napat noted that both governments are currently engaged in discussions around key initiatives, particularly those addressing economic challenges and security concerns. He pointed out that collaborations between the two nations will focus on infrastructure development and social services.

One notable area of cooperation is the initiative surrounding the Chiefs Nakamal, which both governments are discussing to ensure mutual benefits. Napat also highlighted that Australia remains the largest donor to Vanuatu, reinforcing the strong partnership between the two nations.

The Prime Minister further noted that the Australian government has placed special emphasis on supporting the aviation sector, with ongoing discussions aimed at resolving issues in this area.

Minister Conroy reiterated that the funds provided to Vanuatu are a gift and are not expected to be repaid. He reassured the public that this financial support was a gesture of goodwill and solidarity.

This new investment underscores the enduring partnership between Australia and Vanuatu and demonstrates the commitment to rebuilding and strengthening the Pacific community in the face of adversity.
