Smart Drones and Water-Saving Technology Transform Farming in China

Smart drones and water-saving technologies are transforming the way agriculture is practiced in China, offering innovative solutions that countries like Vanuatu could consider in the future.

A group of international journalists participating in the China International Press Communication Center (CIPCC) visited Jiase Farm in Beijing to observe how advanced technologies are improving efficiency in modern farming.

During the visit, the journalists saw vast corn fields where smart drones were being used to spray fertilizer across crops. The technology enables farmers to complete tasks more quickly and accurately while reducing labour, saving time, cutting costs, and conserving water.

The delegation also visited Huayuan Water Saving Company, one of China’s leading companies in smart irrigation technology.

Huayuan operates eight demonstration zones across China showcasing modern irrigation systems. In Jiangsu Province, one demonstration farm covering 2,169 hectares uses 30 intelligent irrigation systems to deliver the precise amount of water needed by crops. The system helps conserve water while increasing agricultural productivity.

The visit highlighted how technology can play a vital role in addressing agricultural challenges, particularly in improving water management and boosting crop yields.

For Vanuatu, where many farmers still rely heavily on rainfall, technologies such as smart irrigation and agricultural drones could provide practical solutions to conserve water, improve crop resilience during dry seasons, increase productivity, and strengthen both food security and farmers’ livelihoods.
