Ciguatera Outbreak Continues as Cases Climb to 75

Health authorities in Vanuatu are raising concern over a growing number of Ciguatera Fish Poisoning cases, with the outbreak still active across the country.

The Ministry of Health confirms that 11 new infections have pushed the total to 75 so far this year. While no deaths have been recorded, several people required hospital care before recovering and being discharged.

The majority of cases have been concentrated on Efate, which accounts for more than half of all infections. Other islands reporting cases include Tanna, Ambae, Pentecost Island, Maewo, Espiritu Santo, Paama, and Aneityum. Young adults between 15 and 34 years old appear to be the most affected group, although cases span all ages.

Investigations link most infections to the consumption of reef fish, particularly commonly eaten species such as Karosol, red fish, red mouth, and parrot fish. These fish can carry natural toxins that build up in the food chain and cause illness when consumed.

Symptoms often begin within a day and may include vomiting, diarrhea, and unusual nerve-related effects such as tingling, numbness, poor coordination, and a burning sensation when touching cold objects.

Health officials are urging the public to seek medical attention early if symptoms appear and to take extra care when consuming reef fish, especially from known high-risk areas. Advice on safer fishing and consumption is available through the Vanuatu Fisheries Department.

Authorities say monitoring will continue as they track the spread of cases and respond to the outbreak.
