VT2 million allocated for pothole repairs in Port Vila

The Road Medics team has been allocated VT2 million this year to carry out pothole repairs across Port Vila as heavy rain and poor drainage continue to damage roads.

Rain remains one of the major causes of road damage, especially in areas where proper drainage and soakaway systems are lacking.

Road Medics team leader Marcel Orren told VBTC News that the budget will help the team continue fixing potholes and maintaining safer road surfaces.

Mr Orren says road damage is also being worsened by contractors using heavy-duty machinery during construction projects around the main town area.

He says some construction operators focus only on their building work and do not always consider the damage caused to tar-sealed roads.

According to him, heavy machinery places additional pressure on the road surface, often leading to cracks and potholes.

When VBTC News visited the team, workers were repairing potholes on the main road heading towards the Shefa Provincial area, while another team was in Erakor sealing new tar surfaces before smaller holes are patched.

Mr Orren says roads are a public asset and is calling on everyone, including contractors, to help look after them.
