The Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority (VMSA) has justified the VT23,000 fee charged to banana boat owners, stating it helps cover the high costs of search and rescue operations, which can exceed VT10 million per incident.
Commissioner of Maritime Affairs, Less John Napauti, said the fee—originally VT17,000 and later increased by VT3,000—reflects the significant resources involved in saving lives at sea, including ships, aircraft, and personnel.
“Just one rescue can cost the government more than VT5 to 10 million. This fee supports those critical efforts,” Napauti explained, adding that revisions to lower the fee are expected next year.
The explanation follows complaints from banana boat owners in northern Vanuatu, who say the current fee is too expensive.
