Vanuatu’s Climate Change Courses Offer Unique Advantage to Students, Says Expert

Students pursuing Climate Change studies at the National University of Vanuatu (NUV) have a significant advantage, according to local expert Mathew Kensen, as the courses reflect the real-world challenges and lifestyle of Vanuatu’s unique climate conditions.

In a recent conversation, Kensen, who helped develop the program, emphasized that the Climate Resilience and Humanitarian Action course is deeply rooted in the Vanuatu context. It’s designed to teach students how climate change impacts daily life and survival in the face of natural disasters.

“You will study this course in your own context, and by the end, it will be easier to grasp because you’re living the issues,” said Kensen. “When you go into the field, you already know what’s happening, so your assignments will be rooted in real-life experience.”

Kensen also pointed out that Vanuatu, particularly the island of Efate, provides a perfect environment for studying climate change. “Efate is a living land. You can study marine ecosystems, rock formations, and geology all in one place, unlike other countries where you’d need to travel hours to find the same resources,” he said.

The Climate Resilience and Humanitarian Action program, which is supported by the French Government, is an opportunity for students in Vanuatu to gain practical and regional knowledge that will be vital for managing the impacts of climate change.
