Vanuatu is mourning the loss of one of its pioneering female leaders, the Late Hilda Lini, who passed away yesterday morning, May 25.
Mrs Lini made history in 1987 when she was elected to Parliament, becoming the first Ni-Vanuatu woman to serve as an MP. During her time in the Second Legislature, she held key ministerial roles including Minister for Rural Water Supply and Health.
In 1996, she was appointed Minister of Justice, Culture and Women’s Affairs. It was during this time that July 24 was officially declared as National Children’s Day — a legacy of her commitment to child rights and welfare.
Late Mrs Hilda Lini was also the sister of the late Father of Independence, Walter Lini. She was known as a strong advocate for justice, equality, and the empowerment of women in leadership.
The official lying-in-state ceremony for the former Member of Parliament was held today at the Vanuatu Parliament House.
VBTC extends sincere condolences to the family, friends, and the nation for the passing of a respected leader and public servant.
