Vanuatu is grappling with a significant nurse shortage, with 386 vacancies nationwide. In response, the Ministry of Health has announced plans to recruit approximately 300 nurses from the Solomon Islands.
Health Minister Hon. John Still Tari Qetu confirmed the situation, stating that the Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Solomon Islands Ministry of Health. The first group of 50 nurses is expected to arrive shortly to provide essential support to the healthcare system.
“We are bringing in 300 nurses, including some doctors, with the initial group arriving soon to help address the current shortfall,” Minister Tari Qetu said.
“We’re working on road improvements so that building materials can reach their destinations, enabling us to complete healthcare facilities,” Minister Tari Qetu added.
Before the nurses can begin their work, the Ministry is prioritizing necessary infrastructure upgrades. Ongoing road construction in southern Ambae aims to facilitate easier access to key healthcare facilities for both materials and personnel.
Minister Tari Qetu noted that delays in these infrastructure projects often stem from contractor-related issues, which have impeded progress on crucial upgrades.
