In a recent episode of “Stret Tok” on Vanuatu Broadcasting and Television Corporation, Mr. Douglas Tamara from Transparency International Vanuatu emphasized the importance of citizens monitoring the performance of their elected leaders.
According to Mr. Tamara, the most effective way for a community to ensure their leaders stay true to their campaign promises is by constantly asking questions. He encouraged citizens to ask questions like “what is happening?” and “where do we go from now?” to keep their leaders accountable.
Mr. Tamara also stated that individual voters have the right to approach their elected leaders to raise concerns or ask questions. He suggested making an appointment or simply “storian” with the leader to share thoughts and raise issues.
The conversation also touched on the issue of seasonal politics contributing to corruption. Mr. Tamara suggested using social media and radio stations to educate citizens on the importance of voting and holding their leaders accountable.
Transparency International Vanuatu plays a crucial role in anti-corruption efforts by making awareness and educating citizens on their rights and duties. The organization encourages citizens to use the Right to Information Unit to get accurate information on government projects and activities.
However, Mr. Tamara noted that local citizens are not making full use of the Right to Information Unit, with only a few people, mostly expatriates, utilizing the service. He assured that the information provided by the unit is not politically influenced and is governed by the Information Law, which imposes a heavy fine on officers who fail to provide information.
The Right to Information Unit is expected to become more effective with the appointment of a commissioner next year, which may encourage more citizens to use the service.
