Vanuatu aims to Champion Climate Initiatives at COP29

Vanuatu’s commitment to amplifying the voices of small island nations in the fight against climate change is clear as it has already sent half of its 71 delegates to COP29 in Azerbaijan this month.

Of the delegation, 30 representatives are from the Vanuatu government, tasked with actively participating in climate negotiations and side events to secure essential project funding. Another 30 are external partners, joined by 11 from Non Government Organizations (NGO), civil society, and the private sector. Roughly 90% of the travel expenses are externally funded, with the government covering a small portion.

Abraham Nasak, Acting Director of the Ministry of Climate Change, highlighted 14 core issues for negotiation, including climate finance, adaptation, and technology. Vanuatu will advocate alongside alliances like the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) and G77 + China to push for impactful climate solutions.

Minister of Climate Change, Hon. John Salong emphasised the urgency of the “1.5°C survival goal,” a focal point in Vanuatu’s stance, backed by climate science. The delegation aims to rally support for stronger commitments to this target, given the region’s vulnerability.

As the current Chair of the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) and the Melanesian Spearhead Group, Vanuatu will represent regional interests at COP29. While some government ministers may remain in Vanuatu due to parliamentary obligations, the delegation includes high-level envoys to ensure Vanuatu’s advocacy remains robust. Vanuatu’s participation is part of a broader initiative to engage global leaders in urgent climate actions that prioritise the resilience and survival of vulnerable island communities worldwide.
