UNELCO Confirms Restoration of Water Supply in CBD, Addresses Rumors and Ongoing Issues

UNELCO has confirmed that water supply has been fully restored to the Central Business District (CBD) area, as announced by Managing Director Fredric Petit. While the water supply is now operational, Petit stated that the UNELCO team is still addressing minor issues, including leaks and the replacement of damaged pipes, which are being resolved.

Petit reassured the public that the water is safe to use, explaining that it was temporarily stopped for thorough testing. He emphasized that the water underwent more extensive testing than usual to ensure its safety.

Regarding recent rumors about the water tank at the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu, Petit clarified that these claims are untrue. He assured the public that there are no issues with the tank, which is not necessary to supply water to the CBD. He also confirmed that a team of specialists from New Zealand would be arriving to assist with any necessary repairs to the tank.

On the power supply front, Petit announced upcoming changes to the transformer power line starting at Paris Shopping in the CBD next week. This work is expected to address current issues with the power supply in the area.

In response to concerns about safety around the VNPF main branch, Petit confirmed that UNELCO staff will not be working in the vicinity due to safety risks. He also dismissed rumors suggesting that UNELCO lacks the necessary equipment, calling such claims false.

However, Petit acknowledged a significant ongoing issue with the power supply on Ifira Island. He explained that all underground high-pressure cables have been damaged, and despite testing alternative solutions, these have not been effective. UNELCO is working with relevant authorities to find a resolution.

For residents experiencing low water pressure, Petit explained that this is likely due to clogging, and urged individuals to contact UNELCO for assistance. He reassured the public that there is sufficient water storage capacity to meet the needs of Port Vila.
