The Pacific is already developing practical solutions to climate change and should continue positioning itself as a global leader in climate innovation, Prime Minister Jotham Napat says.
Speaking at the Pacific Innovation Forum on Climate and Environment (PIFCE) 2026, the Prime Minister said Pacific communities are moving beyond discussions by implementing local solutions that strengthen resilience and support sustainable development.
“This forum is not only about discussing climate challenges; it’s about advancing solutions. It’s about positioning the Pacific as a hub of climate, environmental leadership and transformative action across our Blue Pacific Continent. Innovation is already shaping the way our communities respond to climate and environmental challenges.”
Mr Napat said innovation is already visible across the region through renewable energy projects, climate-smart agriculture, digital early warning systems and coastal protection initiatives.
He said meaningful innovation is measured by the positive impact it has on people’s lives rather than technology alone.
“True innovation is not placed only by technological advancement. It is the ability to improve lives, reduce vulnerability, strengthen resilience and deliver sustainable development outcomes for our people.”
NextGen Youth Ambassador Vepaiamele said momentum is also growing internationally, with more countries responding to the Pacific’s long-standing call for climate justice.
She said the recent advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice reinforces that protecting the global climate system is a responsibility all nations must take seriously.
“We must see this fundamental truth translated directly into urgent climate action and policy.”
The three-day forum has brought together government leaders, businesses, civil society organisations, researchers and development partners from across the Pacific to share innovative approaches to climate resilience and environmental protection.
The forum continues in Port Vila until 3 July.
