Community Safety Teams has been established in two communities in Port Vila to address rising concerns about youth crime. This initiative follows incidents where youths engaged in harmful activities, including soliciting money from passersby and attacking a young boy in the Erakor Bridge area.
Mr. John Mangawai, a participant in a recent community meeting, reported that discussions during the meeting emphasized the need for youth to adopt more peaceful behaviors. In response to these concerns, the Tamalas (Tebakor community) and Freswota 5 communities decided to create a safety team, which will include local young men and boys patrolling the area at night to deter criminal activities.
With the crime rate in Port Vila, prompting Freswota 5 to take action by forming the safety team with assistance from the Vanuatu Police Force. Team leader Mr. Cruz Garae indicated that the initiative aims to involve youths in community safety, particularly during weekends after school.
The Secretary of the Tamalas Community Safety Team stated that their goal is to enhance security in the community.
Mr. Samson Garae, Director of National Crime Prevention and Community Policy, emphasized the necessity of implementing security measures at the community level.
The Community Safety Team has been operational for eight months, focusing on reducing potential crime in the area. Local residents are encouraged to share their ideas to support this initiative.
Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Andrew Napuat has called for all communities to establish their own safety teams to help reduce crime and support local youth.
