Bladinier Community Raises VT276,000 to Fix Flood-Damaged Road

The Bladinier community near King Motor in Port Vila has raised VT276,000 in a weekend fundraiser to help repair a badly damaged local road.

Heavy rain over time has worsened the condition of the road, making it difficult and unsafe for residents. The community, which includes about 1,000 people and 30 landlords, came together on Saturday for the fundraising drive.

Executive Committee Chairman Silas Batick confirmed the amount raised and thanked the government for its response.

“We’re grateful to the Prime Minister for sending his advisor to inspect the road and for approving work to start next week,” Mr. Batick said. “Thanks also to the Minister of Climate Change for donating one cubic of coral to help cover the road.”

Mr. Batick said the goal is not only to improve the road but also to install proper streetlights to make the area safer at night.

“It’s a big concern when our kids are out on the streets at night—we worry for their safety.”

The community has planned another fundraising event for this coming Saturday.
