The Open World Program, administered by the U.S. Congressional Office for International Leadership (COIL), has given a delegation of Vanuatu Members of Parliament the opportunity to engage with members of the U.S. Congress, state legislators and local communities while learning about governance, community development and public service delivery.

Torres Member of Parliament John Joseph has commended the U.S. Embassy in Port Vila for supporting the delegation’s participation in the exchange programme, which took place in Washington, D.C. and Minnesota.

Hon. Joseph said the knowledge gained through the programme would help Vanuatu’s Parliament develop practical solutions to improve health, agriculture, infrastructure and education, particularly in remote island communities.

“On behalf of the participating members, I extend our profound appreciation to the U.S. Embassy in Port Vila for facilitating this extraordinary opportunity. By observing international best practices in governance and community development, our Parliament is now better equipped to implement sustainable, practical solutions that directly uplift the livelihoods of our village communities.”

During the visit, the delegation also met organisations working in youth development, renewable energy, agriculture and community funding initiatives. Hon. Joseph said the experience would particularly benefit communities in TORBA Province and strengthen the partnership between Vanuatu and the United States.
