The Pacific Women’s Network Against Violence Against Women (PWNAVAW) has condemned the Malvatumauri National Council of Chiefs’ call to revoke Dr Anna Naupa’s appointment as Director General of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), describing it as a misogynistic attack on women’s leadership.

The Network was responding to an ultimatum issued by the Malvatumauri National Council of Chiefs, which called for Dr Naupa’s appointment to be revoked, arguing that the role of MSG Director General should be held by a man in accordance with custom.

Network Chair and Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Coordinator Shamima Ali said Dr Naupa’s appointment was a historic achievement for women across the Pacific.

“Dr Anna Naupa’s appointment is path-breaking for women and girls in Vanuatu and across the region. It marks the first time that a ni-Vanuatu and a Pacific woman has been appointed to lead the MSG Secretariat.”

Ali said the Network fully supports the statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister of Vanuatu defending Dr Naupa’s appointment.

“Women’s leadership across the Pacific is not up for negotiation.”

The Vanuatu Women’s Centre (VWC) also condemned the Malvatumauri’s position, describing the call as a disgrace to the women and girls of Vanuatu.

VWC Coordinator Tatavola Matas said Dr Naupa was selected on merit and that challenging her appointment undermines women’s rightful place in leadership and decision-making.

Founding Coordinator Merilyn Tahi also called on traditional leaders to recognise and support women’s leadership, noting that women such as Hilda Lini and Grace Molisa played vital roles in Vanuatu’s struggle for independence.

The Pacific Women’s Network said honouring the legacy of Pacific women who fought for justice, freedom and independence means ensuring today’s women leaders are respected, supported and given every opportunity to succeed.
