The Etas community on Efate has launched its first-ever Community Task Force in a major step towards improving public safety and restoring peace and order.
The initiative was established following growing concerns over anti-social behaviour involving young people, including late-night gatherings, alcohol and marijuana use, disturbances in neighbourhoods, and incidents where buses were stopped and money demanded from drivers and passengers.
Community leaders said the task force was created after youth leaders and chiefs worked together to find a long-term solution to these ongoing issues.
The launch marks a significant milestone for Etas, where discussions about creating a community task force had been taking place for some time before becoming a reality in June 2026.
Chairman of the Etas Community Task Force said he was encouraged by the strong support received from chiefs, community members and national leaders, including Speaker of Parliament and Efate Rural MP Stephen Felix, Eratap Area Council Councillor Renny Karr Charlie, and lawyer Avock Gordon.
Their support, he said, demonstrates a shared commitment to building a safer and more secure community.
The newly established task force has already begun its duties, working closely with community leaders to promote respect, maintain public order and respond to issues affecting residents.
Many residents, particularly women, young girls and children, have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that it will help create a safer environment for everyone living in the Etas community.
