A project to renovate and upgrade Vanuatu’s airport terminal, originally built in the 1990s, is now in its design stage after Fosi Consulting was awarded the tender.
The project includes visibility studies, design planning, and cost assessments, with an estimated budget of around 18 million vatu.
Chief Executive Officer of Airports Vanuatu Limited, Jason Rakau, told VBTC News that the design must consider future growth and increasing demand at the airport.
“We need to design the airport to accommodate the level of traffic we expect in the next 20 years. While we are addressing the current terminal, small expansions are only like putting a band-aid on a bigger problem. Congestion will remain unless we properly address it with a new terminal in line with the master plan.”
Mr Rakau said the airport is already experiencing pressure, particularly with cargo space and the growing number of passengers from multiple international flights arriving daily.
He added that the government is also considering several options moving forward.
“Work is ongoing. The successful contractor has already presented concept designs to Airports Vanuatu, Public Works, MIPU, and the Ministry of Finance. As we move through the design stage, the government is reviewing options, including future financing and possible private investment.”
The project is being managed by the Public Works Department through its Project Management Unit and is currently focusing on key areas such as arrivals, check-in, and departure facilities.
Authorities say more detailed information, including confirmed funding plans, is expected to be released next month.
