Concern Grows Over Underage Drinking in Vanuatu

Concerns are growing over the increasing involvement of underage youths in alcohol consumption across Vanuatu.

The issue was raised during the VBTC News Tokbak Show, which focused on the sale of alcohol to underage youths.

One parent who called into the program highlighted that low prices of alcoholic beverages are making it easier for young people to access alcohol.

“Prices for liquor and alcohol in shops are very low now. That’s why when a young person has just 1000vt, they can already afford to buy a bottle,” the parent said.

The caller also raised concerns about illegal late-night sales, particularly from black market outlets operating beyond permitted hours.

“On weekends, some shops close at 11pm, but others continue selling throughout the night. They don’t open the main door, but young people go around the back to buy alcohol. While parents are asleep, youths go out to drink and this creates problems in our communities,” the parent added.

Another parent expressed concern that some businesses prioritise profit over the wellbeing of young people.

“Many black market operators have licenses, but when underage youths come to buy alcohol, they don’t refuse because they want the money. They don’t think about the life of that young person,” the parent said.

The caller stressed that this issue is affecting not only urban areas but also communities across the islands, calling on the government to strengthen monitoring and enforcement.

Parents are now urging authorities to take stronger action to regulate alcohol sales and ensure that businesses comply with laws designed to protect young people.
