A strong earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale occurred near Santo Island last night.
There are no reports of any deaths or serious injuries.
The earthquake happened at around 7:40 pm, and its epicentre was located about 26 kilometers east of Luganville, at a depth of 88 kilometers.
Many places across Vanuatu felt the tremor, including Shefa Province.
VBTC News reporter Rani Taviti, who is in Luganville, said that many items in shops and homes fell down.
Last night, VBTC News reported that several buildings in town showed cracks in their walls, including the Northern District Hospital and several other buildings.
The Sanma Disaster Response Team will carry out assessments today to determine the full extent of the damage.
Some services may be affected. Bred Bank said it will delay opening its doors today due to safety assessments.
The earthquake caused a power outage across the entire town and in areas connected to the main grid.
Power began to return gradually after two hours.
Electricity was also cut in some areas on Malakula Island.
Water supply was also disrupted.
Although the earthquake was strong, no tsunami alert was issued.
The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazard Department (VMGD) said people may continue to feel aftershocks.
People are advised to check their homes and report any major damage.
