The Vanuatu Archery Federation is working towards securing a standard and dedicated training field to avoid disruptions during competitions and training sessions.
The federation hopes to soon have a secure space, with support from the responsible Ministry, to carry out necessary upgrades. Plans include fencing the field, keeping it properly maintained, installing lights for after-hours training, and building a secure storage facility for equipment.
“We are trying to secure the field first, put up fencing around it, keep it clean at all times for training. We also need lighting for after working hours or after school, and a proper shelter to store equipment,” federation representatives said.
Although the field is still an open space, athletes continue to train daily as preparations intensify for upcoming competitions.
VBTC Sports spoke with National Coach Francis Runa, who confirmed that training is already underway for the upcoming Oceania Championship in New Zealand this April.
“We are preparing now for the Oceania Championship in New Zealand, from Under-14 to Under-23 categories. Team selection will begin at the end of this month,” Runa said.
However, he highlighted major challenges with equipment, particularly damaged arrows that have not been replaced since last year.
“Equipment is not enough for everyone. We are trying to seek small assistance or sponsorship to purchase arrows for those travelling to New Zealand. The last arrows we used in Fiji were damaged, so we need better equipment for the upcoming competition,” he explained.
Despite these challenges, training continues at full pace as the federation prepares not only for overseas competitions but also for long-term international preparation towards the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti.
