A well-known local in Port Vila, popularly known as “Lizard Man,” is speaking out about the importance of youth becoming independent and earning their own money instead of relying solely on parents.
Lenge Vira shared his thoughts as he watched more children graduate from school this year.
VBTC News spoke with Mr. Vira in town, and he said there are many areas, such as tourism spots that visitors love, where locals could take advantage but there are few locally made products like canoes.
“Every day we keep saying, ‘No, my mum or dad will give this to me.’ But one day, when they are not here, who would you depend on? If you look on the seawall, only foreigners are doing businesses, no locals. Maybe we could put canoes or kayaks out for rent?”
Mr. Vira said the city is big, but there is little effort from locals to sell fresh fruit on the streets.
“Our big city locals don’t make use of opportunities. Like, using a big container, putting fruits and cutting them to sell. Otherwise, we only support Chinese sellers who sell export drinks, and at the end of the day, it leads to diabetes.”
He also expressed happiness seeing school children taking small steps during the festive season, selling items and earning money.
“I was happy to see two students from Lycée Lab selling stuff for VT20 each.”
Mr. Vira, who many people know as “Lizard Man,” said he does this work every day and it is something he is glad to do.
