The Department of Tourism (DoT), Civil Aviation Authority of Vanuatu (CAAV) and Airports Vanuatu Limited (AVL) have announced coordinated measures to address ongoing passenger congestion at Port Vila International Airport.

The agencies acknowledged recent concerns raised by travelers both on social media and on-site, especially during peak travel times. They said ensuring a smoother arrival experience remains a priority for Vanuatu’s tourism sector.

AVL has completed a review of international airline schedules and introduced changes to arrival and departure times effective November 2025. The staggered schedule aims to reduce crowding, ease terminal pressure and improve passenger flow.

Tourism officials say the improvements are essential, noting that visitor experience directly affects the industry, which supports thousands of Ni-Vanuatu families.

Alongside scheduling changes, AVL is planning terminal upgrades, including improvements to toilets, waiting areas and air circulation systems. These works will be staged to allow normal airport operations to continue.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities, through the PWD Project Unit, is leading the procurement process for the Port Vila Terminal Upgrade, identified by the government as a national priority. Santo Airport’s upgrade will follow.

PWD has already released tenders, with proposals due in mid-December 2025.

Officials say the combined operational adjustments and long-term infrastructure upgrades reflect a whole-of-government effort to strengthen capacity, safety and overall airport experience.

Regular coordination meetings between AVL, CAAV, DoT, airlines and stakeholders will continue.

The agencies thanked travelers for their patience, saying Vanuatu remains committed to improving the international arrival experience and ensuring the airport reflects the country’s hospitality.
