Government Approves Vt600 Million Road Rehabilitation for Seaside and Nambatu

The Government of Vanuatu has taken another major step toward improving urban infrastructure with the approval of a Vt600 million road rehabilitation contract for the Seaside and Nambatu areas in Port Vila.

The Council of Ministers (COM) has officially endorsed the contract, which was awarded to Downer EDI Works Vanuatu Ltd. following a recommendation from the Central Tender Board on October 30th, 2025.

Prime Minister Jotham Napat described the decision as a milestone for residents and businesses in both areas.

“This is a momentous day for the residents and businesses of Seaside and Nambatu,” Prime Minister Napat said. “The rehabilitation of these roads is a critical step towards improving the lives of our citizens and enhancing the economic prospects of our communities. We are grateful to the Australian Government for their support through the Vanuatu–Australia Infrastructure for Development (VAI4D) Program, which is making this project possible.”

Scope of Work

Under the contract, the project will deliver key road upgrades including:

  • Construction of 138 metres of steel reinforced concrete pavement near Mangoes Resort
  • Pothole repair and spot repair throughout Seaside and Nambatu
  • Rehabilitation of 1,160 metres of roads (light blue lines)
  • Resealing of 5,670 metres of roads across the mapped area

Downer EDI Works Vanuatu Ltd., known for its experience in road construction, will lead the works over an estimated nine-month period (270 days).

Future Infrastructure Plans

Prime Minister Napat noted that this is only the first package of a broader national road improvement plan.

“This contract represents just Package 1 of our road rehabilitation efforts, with further packages planned to upgrade other main road networks,” he said. “We expect to see significant improvements to the Port Vila CBD in 2026 as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the city’s infrastructure and services.”

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, work on the Nambatu roads will commence once the Public Works Department completes ongoing projects in Freshwota and Erakor.

The government remains confident that these infrastructure investments will improve connectivity, safety, and the overall quality of life for Port Vila residents.
