Bwatnapni Opens First Community Climate Centre to Empower Pentecost Islanders

The first Community Climate Centre (CCC) has officially opened in Bwatnapni, Central Pentecost, marking a major step toward strengthening local climate resilience in Vanuatu.

From a press release it states that the centre was launched following a four-day training workshop hosted by the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) in partnership with the Vanuatu Klaemet Infomesen blong Redy, Adapt mo Protekt (VanKIRAP) project. The initiative focused on empowering local leaders and community members with vital “Klaemet Save” — or climate knowledge — to help them prepare for and respond to environmental challenges.

The workshop, held from September 22–25, equipped participants with practical skills to understand weather patterns, seasonal forecasts, and geo-hazards such as volcanoes and floods. Participants learned to access vital updates through SMS, radio, and online platforms and how to use seasonal data for farming, disaster preparedness, and community planning.

A key part of the program was integrating traditional knowledge with modern science. VMGD and VanKIRAP facilitators, led by Project Manager Moriah Matou, highlighted that local forecasting methods remain a powerful and accessible tool for communities.

“Our goal is not to replace traditional knowledge, but to complement it with modern tools,” said William Worwor, Senior Training and Outreach Officer at VMGD. “This approach ensures that communities have multiple reliable sources of information to make informed decisions.”

The final day of the training placed strong emphasis on Gender, Equity, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), ensuring that all community members — including women, the elderly, and people with disabilities — benefit equally from climate initiatives. A highlight was the interactive “Walk in Their Shoes” activity, which allowed participants to experience the challenges faced by vulnerable groups during emergencies.

VanKIRAP’s Traditional Knowledge Officer Angeline Banga reflected on the success of the program, saying,

“The community’s response showed that they value blending our scientific work with their own traditional wisdom. It’s this connection that builds real resilience.”

In his closing remarks, Kelly Tabi, Secretary General of the Penama Provincial Government, congratulated participants for becoming certified “Climate Champions.”

“You are now armed with vital ‘Klaemet Save.’ You have the responsibility to share this knowledge with communities across Pentecost and beyond,” he said.

The launch concluded with the unveiling of a new signboard and mini billboard for the centre. The Bwatnapni Community Climate Centre will serve as an ongoing hub for information, training, and early warning dissemination — ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against climate change.
