Whooping Cough Cases Rise to 179

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the number of whooping cough cases in Vanuatu has risen to 179.

Latest figures show 141 cases on Tanna and Erromango, while 38 cases have been recorded on Efate.

The Ministry says the outbreak on Efate is linked to the spread of the disease from Tanna.

Children under five years old and pregnant mothers who have not completed their full vaccination schedule remain at the highest risk of infection.

Parents are urged to ensure their children under five receive all their doses, while anyone showing symptoms such as fever, runny nose, cough, difficulty breathing or vomiting after coughing should seek immediate medical attention.

The Ministry added that symptoms can appear 7 to 21 days after infection.

Health officials are working closely with partners including UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and the Vanuatu Australian Health Program to boost awareness and promote pentavalent vaccination, which protects children against whooping cough.
