Tongoa Mothers Aim to Raise VT2 Million to Push for New Handicraft Market House

On Tongoa Island, weaving pandanus mats is more than tradition it’s a lifeline for families. The mothers of the Tongoa Handicraft Association brought 500 mats to sell this year, aiming to raise VT2 million, a significant step toward supporting their families and preserving their craft.

“Without an official handicraft house, we must sell mats door-to-door or carry them long distances,” says Alice Joe, the association’s president. “It is tiring, but this is our only way to earn.”

Their message is clear: they want to show the government the need for a handicraft market house on the island. Such a space would not only ease the burden on the mothers but also create a hub for preserving and promoting Tongoa’s weaving tradition.

This year, the association brought over 500 mats to the market, aiming to raise VT2 million. Already, sales have reached VT312,000 a testament to their determination and skill. Last year, 105 mats earned VT700,000, showing just how much effort and sacrifice goes into each piece.

“Pandanus is our life,” Alice says. “It’s the only way mothers can support their families. We hope authorities will hear our call.”
