Gama’s Journey from Seasonal Worker to Independent Carpenter

Hilson Gama’s passion for carpentry began far from home, in Australia, where he worked under the seasonal worker program. It was there that he discovered more than just a paycheck he gained tools, skills, and a love for crafting wood into tables, chairs, and beds. “I fell in love with carpentry there,” he recalls.

Armed with the knowledge and tools he acquired abroad, Hilson returned to Ambae in 2012, starting small by selling furniture to locals. Over the years, his dedication and craftsmanship grew, and in 2024 he obtained his license and permit to bring his products to Port Vila, expanding his reach while maintaining the personal touch that defines his work.

The work is not easy. Harvesting timber from the bush is physically demanding, with heavy wood often leaving his body aching. “It’s tiring, but I have to do it because I love it,” he says.

Hilson’s motivation goes beyond carpentry it’s deeply personal. He remembers the words of one of his role models, the late Walter Lini: independence is key. “We must try to be independent,” he reflects. Through his craft, Hilson is doing just that creating his own products, building his own business, and shaping his future with his own hands.

For Hilson Gama, carpentry is more than a trade; it is a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and independence, from Ambae to Vila, one handcrafted piece at a time.
